WiFi Speed Test
How to run a WiFi speed test
Pause large downloads and 4K streams, then run this WiFi speed test twice. If numbers jump around, interference or a crowded channel is likely. A laptop next to the router should be close to your plan speed; a phone in another room will usually be slower.
Wi-Fi vs ISP speed
A WiFi speed test measures the path from this device through your access point to the test server. Old routers, DFS channels, neighboring networks and mesh hops all cut Mbps. If Ethernet is much faster than Wi-Fi, the internet line is fine and the wireless hop is the limit.
What is a good WiFi speed?
For one HD stream, about 10–25 Mbps at the device is comfortable. 4K, cloud backups and many phones on the same SSID need more. Ping under 40 ms on Wi-Fi is a healthy home network; 80 ms+ often means congestion or a weak signal.
FAQ
Why is my WiFi speed slower than my plan?
Plans are measured at the modem. Wi-Fi adds radio loss. Distance, walls, 2.4 GHz vs 5/6 GHz, and other devices reduce the speed this test sees.
Should I test on 5 GHz?
Yes when you are close to the router. 2.4 GHz reaches farther but is slower and noisier. Use the band your devices actually stay on day to day.
