How to test fiber the fair way
For a plan check, use Ethernet from the ONT or gateway, a modern laptop, and this fiber speed test. Wi-Fi 5 devices often top out well below a 1 Gbps fiber plan even when the fiber is healthy.
Ping on fiber
Fiber usually has low ping when the path is short. If ping is high on fiber, look at Wi-Fi, VPN, or a congested route — not the glass in the street.
FAQ
Why is my fiber speed test only 200 Mbps?
A 100 Mbps Ethernet port, USB dongle, or old Wi-Fi card will cap a gigabit plan. Check the NIC speed in the OS.
Should fiber upload match download?
Many fiber plans are symmetric. If upload is a small fraction of download on a wired test, ask the ISP.
